Victorian Riichi Open Autumn 2025
We’re happy to announce the second Victorian Riichi Open for the riichi community of Melbourne and beyond! Come join us for a fun day of mahjong, whether you’d like to compete for glory or enjoy some evening free play.

The venue is wheelchair-accessible.
By public transport:
By train, it is a 5-minute (300m) walk from Newmarket station. Craigieburn and Upfield services depart from Southern Cross, Flinders Street, and Melbourne Central stations.
By tram, take Route 57 (towards West Maribyrnong) - Stop 26 (Newmarket Plaza/Racecourse Rd) with a 2-minute walk.
There is also street parking near the venue.

Entry Fee
$15 for the entire event (tournament and evening free play)
$5 for evening free play only - if you are interested you must also sign up via the form below
Registration
The attendance cap of 52 participants has been reached.
Join the wait list through this Google Forms link (opens a new tab).
Wait listed players will be contacted in order and given a short time window to secure their spot.
Prizes
$200 guaranteed cash prize pool for the top 4 players.
In addition, 1st place will receive a trophy, and 2nd-4th place will receive medals. 1st and 2nd place will also be guaranteed free entry to ARMO25.
3rd and 4th place will receive a distribution of instructional and philosophical books written by two Japanese pro players (starring in M.LEAGUE and JPML/NPM).
5th-8th place will receive a distribution of instructional mahjong books and small prizes.
All participants will receive an entry gift included with their attendance: our beautiful custom dice, keychain, a pack of coloured tenbou, and stickers.
There will be additional special prizes to be announced at the end of the day.
Ruleset
WRC 2022 ruleset with the following modifications:
Mod 2.1: Red Fives (aka ari)
Mod 3.2: Nagashi Mangan
Mod 4.1: Uma (30/10)
Mod 4.4: Kazoe Yakuman
Mod 6.3: Lower Penalties

Players are expected to show good will and fair sportsmanship at all times.
Format
5 hanchan with pure cumulative score. There will be no top cut. Your final score at the end of the day determines your ranking.
The pairing algorithm is a work in progress*, keep an eye on this part.

Food and Drink
Bottled water, coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided during the day.
There’s also heaps of food and drink options really close by, cafes, burgers, kebabs, laksa, bubble tea, sushi, …
Evening catering (before freeplay) will be a group pizza, orders to be taken on the day.
Social Event
Mahjong in the Park. With a barbeque.

Handled on a case by case basis. If you need to cancel, let us know as soon as possible, either through Discord or replying to the confirmation email.
